Patna (AFP) Jan 28, 2010
Demonstrators in poverty-hit eastern India burnt tyres and blocked roads on Thursday to protest against sky-rocketing food prices, piling pressure on authorities to crack down on inflation. Police in Bihar state rounded up scores of demonstrators including protest leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, head of the main state opposition party Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and a prominent figure nationally. Sri Lankan president triumphant, despite poll challenge
Colombo (AFP) Jan 28, 2010
Sri Lanka's president said Thursday his re-election was a riposte to critics of his handling of the war against Tamil rebels, even as his beaten rival denounced the result and went to ground. The United States congratulated Mahinda Rajapakse for sweeping back to a second term, but also called for a full investigation into charges of vote fraud levelled by the president's main challenger, Sarath Fonseka. Official results gave Rajapakse 57.9 percent of the popular vote from Tuesday's bitterly foug ... read more

Himalayas Key To South Asian Monsoons
Cambridge MA (SPX) Jan 26, 2010
Harvard climate scientists suggest that the Tibetan Plateau-thought to be the primary source of heat that drives the South Asian monsoon-may have far less of an effect than the Himalayas and other surrounding mountains. As the monsoon brings needed rainfall and water to billions of people each year, understanding its proper origin, especially in the context of global climate change, is crucial f ... more

India's 'miracle' biofuel crop: too good to be true?
New Delhi (AFP) Jan 27, 2010
To its fans, jatropha is a miracle crop, an eco-friendly answer to India's growing energy needs, but some experts are starting to question whether the wonder-shrub is too good to be true. The seeds of the wild plant, which grows abundantly across India, produce non-edible oil that can be blended with diesel, to make the biofuel that is part of government efforts to cut carbon emissions and c ... more

China's odd climate-change remark
New Delhi (UPI) Jan 26, 2009
China's top climate-change negotiator said he was keeping an open mind on whether global warming was man-made or the result of natural cycles. Speaking in New Delhi following the conclusion Sunday of a two-day meeting of ministers from the BASIC group of the most powerful emerging economies - China, India, Brazil and South Africa - Xie Zhenhua said climate change was a "solid fact." But, he said, more and better scientific research was needed to determine the causes. India and South ... read more
