China's odd climate-change remark
New Delhi (UPI) Jan 26, 2009
China's top climate-change negotiator said he was keeping an open mind on whether global warming was man-made or the result of natural cycles. Speaking in New Delhi following the conclusion Sunday of a two-day meeting of ministers from the BASIC group of the most powerful emerging economies - China, India, Brazil and South Africa - Xie Zhenhua said climate change was a "solid fact." But, he said, more and better scientific research was needed to determine the causes. India and South ... read more

Commentary: Fatigue and trust deficit
Washington (UPI) Jan 22, 2009
The 9.2 magnitude earthquake that triggered the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami claimed some 230,000 lives in 13 countries. But the Port-au-Prince 7.0 quake may exceed that toll in one small country. Haiti's capital will have to be rebuilt from the ground up, like German and Japanese cities after World War II. For a city of 3 million that was designed to handle a mere 50,000, there was little modern infrastructure to begin with. But it will still cost billions. Fighting two trillion-dollar wars abroa ... read more

Indians keep faith with Ganges dips despite pollution crisis
Kanpur, India (AFP) Jan 24, 2010
For India's devout Hindus, the sacred River Ganges is always clean and always pure -- even if its waters are a toxic stew of human sewage, discarded garbage and factory waste. The belief that the Ganges washes away sin entices millions of Hindus into the river each year, and huge crowds of pilgrims are currently passing through the town of Haridwar for the three-month Kumbh Mela bathing fest ... more

Snail shell provides clues for armor
Cambridge, Mass. (UPI) Jan 20, 2009
The shell of a tiny marine snail could be a model for better armor for soldiers and military vehicles, scientists in Massachusetts said. The shell of the scaly-foot snail can dissipate an amount of energy that would cause weaker shells to break, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said in a release Tuesday. The snail lives on the floor of the Indian Ocean near hydrothermal vents where it is exposed to temperature fluctuations and attack from crabs, said researcher Ch ... read more
