Bangladesh patrols to protect Bengal tiger
Dhaka (AFP) March 29, 2010
Bangladesh will form patrols in the world's largest mangrove forest in a bid to stop locals beating the critically endangered Bengal tiger to death, an official said Monday. The move follows an increase in tiger deaths in the 10,000-square-kilometre (3,860 square miles) Sunderbans forest, with dozens beaten to death over the last decade after wandering into local villages. Canberra, Australia (UPI) Mar 24, 2009
A smuggler accused of sending 1,500 refugees to Australia is likely to only face a fine and suspended sentence. Abraham Lauhenapessy, a 49-year-old Indonesian also known as Captain Bram, was arrested last October in Indonesia after the Indonesian navy intercepted his 90-foot wooden boat carrying 250 Sri Lankan would-be asylum seekers. He was discovered hiding among the asylum-see ... more

US nuclear companies missing out in India
New Delhi (AFP) March 24, 2010
US nuclear firms looked poised to benefit from a 2008 deal that threw open India's promise-filled atomic market, but instead are watching from the sidelines as French and Russian rivals cash in. The 2008 deal, pushed through by former president George W. Bush, eased a three-decade international embargo on the sale of nuclear technology to India imposed after the country's first nuclear test ... more

Costa Rica's Mysterious Stone Spheres
Lawrence KS (SPX) Mar 24, 2010
The ancient stone spheres of Costa Rica were made world-famous by the opening sequence of "Raiders of the Lost Ark," when a mockup of one of the mysterious relics nearly crushed Indiana Jones. So perhaps John Hoopes is the closest thing at the University of Kansas to the movie action hero. Hoopes, associate professor of anthropology and director of the Global Indigenous Nations Studi ... more

Commentary: Pakistan's about face
Washington (UPI) Mar 22, 2009
Pakistan's decades-long Afghan policy has undergone a radical change. Strategically, Afghanistan is no longer considered part of Pakistan's "western defense in depth" should India attack Pakistan from the east. The country's defense doctrine also included covert assistance for the Taliban insurgency. The game changer has been a steady rapprochement between the U.S. and Pakistani defense establishments, as well as their intelligence agencies. Taliban was originally midwifed by Pakistan's Inter-S ... read more
