by Richard Tomkins Washington (UPI) May 31, 2017 UPI
Saab is to continue providing maintenance and support of Gripen C/D fighters until the end of 2019, the company reported Wednesday.

The contract, issued by the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration, carries the value of $217.5 million.

"This contract will ensure effective Gripen C/D operation and availability for the coming years," Torsten Öhman, acting head of the Support and Services business area of Saab, said in a press release. "Our support solutions contribute to Gripen's low life-cycle cost and provide the Swedish Armed Forces and other Gripen customers with the most effective means by which to sustain their aircraft."

Saab said maintenance and support will be conducted at its facility in Linköping and five other locations in the country. Four company business areas will be involved -- Support and Services, Aeronautics, Industrial Products and Services, and Surveillance.

The contract comes into effect in June.
