Rolls-Royce to supply MV-22 aircraft engines for U.S., Japan

The U.S. Navy has given Rolls-Royce a $117.7 million contract modification to procure MV-22 aircraft engines for both the U.S. Marine Corps and Japan.

Under the contract modification, Rolls-Royce will supply 50 AE1107C engines, with 38 going to the Marines and 12 going to the government of Japan. The order combines procurement for the Navy and sales to Japan under the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program.

Work on the contract will be performed in Indianapolis, Ind., and is expected to be complete by November 2017.

The Boeing-made MV-22 Osprey is a tiltrotor aircraft combining rotary-wing and fixed-wing capabilities, designed to have the high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft and the long range of a helicopter.

The aircraft's propulsion is supported by two Rolls-Royce AE1107C engines, and can reach a maximum cruise speed of 310 miles per hour.
