by Ryan Maass Rome (UPI) Feb 21, 2017 UPI

Leonardo delivered its first NH90 Maritime - Italian Navy Tactical Transport helicopter during a ceremony held at Luni Naval Base.

The delivery marks the first of ten scheduled for the Italian navy, which designated the aircraft as MH-90. Leonardo flight-tested and designed the aircraft from its Venice-Tessera facility.

The NH90 Maritime - Italian Navy Tactical Transport, or MITT, is fitted to perform amphibious support and special forces operations. It can also be used for tactical land transport duties. Leonardo says the new aircraft will bolster the NATO frigate helicopter fleet in addition to supporting the Italian navy.

Leonardo's MITT is based on the NH90 medium-lift, multirole military helicopter, which makes up the NATO frigate helicopter fleet. The aircraft is equipped with an integrated avionics suite and advanced mission systems.

Italy's government procured the helicopter as part of its effort to modernize its military assets. Other rotorcraft in the country's fleet include the AgustaWestland AW101, the Agusta-Bell AB212, and the AgustaWestland AW139.
