France, China sign aviation, nuclear deals
Beijing (AFP) Dec 21, 2009
France and China on Monday hailed their reinvigorated ties, putting a spat over Tibet behind them and sealing a series of economic deals during a visit by French Prime Minister Francois Fillon. Fillon's high-profile visit came on the heels of the marathon climate change talks in Copenhagen, at which China came in for sharp criticism -- notably from the Europeans -- for rejecting any move to ... read more

Tibet's glaciers in danger of disappearing
Beijing (UPI) Dec 15, 2009
Tibet's glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, scientists say. Black soot is probably responsible for as much as half of the glacial melt and greenhouse gases responsible for the rest, according to research announced Tuesday by NASA and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. "During the last 20 years, the black soot concentration has increased two- to three-fold relative to its ... more

New drug threatens India's endangered vultures
New Delhi (AFP) Dec 15, 2009
Scientists who helped secure a ban on a cattle medicine blamed for plummeting vulture populations in India are scratching their heads after a replacement drug also proved lethal to the birds. Vultures, which have almost mythical status across much of the world, have become an endangered species in India due to their vulnerability to drugs found in the carrion they eat. Their near total ... more

Rural communities lead Nepal's green fightback
Kavre, Nepal (AFP) Dec 15, 2009
Thirty years ago, Nepalese farmer Badri Prasad Jangam realised that the once thickly-wooded hillside that overlooks his home had been transformed into a barren slope. Decades of deforestation had taken their toll, stripping away the topsoil, affecting vital underground water sources and threatening to bring disaster to a community entirely dependent on farming for its livelihood. Now the ... more

'Dire' Bangladesh policing threatens democracy: think-tank
Dhaka (AFP) Dec 14, 2009
Bangladesh's police force is in such a "dire state" that it risks inviting a military takeover of law and order duties, an international research institute has warned. The Brussels-based International Crisis Group (ICG) said in a report published over the weekend that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government lacked the political will to reform the police force despite a UN-led effort to do ... more

Wind power to gain from Copenhagen deal
New Delhi (UPI) Dec 14, 2009
A breakthrough deal in climate-change talks in Copenhagen would lead to a sales boost for the wind power industry, says the chief of India's biggest maker of wind-turbine generators. Suzlon, based in the Indian city of Pune, could see a ten-fold increase in annual revenues by 2020 with a successful Copenhagen outcome, predicts chief executive Tulsi Tanti. India tests nuclear-capable ballistic missile
Bhubaneshwar, India (AFP) Dec 13, 2009
India successfully tested a nuclear-capable ballistic missile from a ship near the east coast on Sunday, a defence official said. The Dhanush, which has a short range of 350 kilometres (220 miles), is a navy version of the surface-to-surface Prithvi missile and can carry both nuclear and conventional warheads. The missile was successfully fired from a ship in the Bay of Bengal, said S.P. Das, director of Integrated Test Range, a unit of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation.
