Time short for Ladakh flood victims as winter looms

Winters come harsh and early in India's Himalayan region of Ladakh, where the waning summer spells more hardship for thousands left homeless by devastating flash floods. In Ladakh's main city, Leh, around 800 families lost everything in the torrent of mud and water that invaded their homes 10 days ago and killed nearly 190 people. 'Almost nil oil spill' now from stricken ship off Mumbai

Indian coastguards on Monday said that leaking oil from a stricken container ship that collided with another vessel off Mumbai had reduced to a trickle, but fears about its impact on the coastline remained. The death toll in India's disputed northern Kashmir area rose to 24 after police opened fire on rioters, killing two people and injuring five more.
